Introduction

Another fishing village, Chowara is a long stretch of virgin sand, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of the main Kovalam beach and Vizhinjam. It is a secluded stretch ideal for long walks and soaking up the local sights and sounds. On an amble down the coastline, eagles and kites soaring in circles above the sea near the beach, is a common sight. Chowara is famous for its Ayyappa temple nestled atop a hillock overlooking the beach. What fascinates most travelers is the duration of the temple festival! The celebrations go on for 56 days beginning November 15 to the mid of January, and is attended by thousands of devotees from across Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Close to Chowara is Azhimalathura beach which is also worth a trip. Strangely, this is the only beach in Kerala where the water is believed to be ebbing away rather than deluging the coast in monsoons. While at Chowara you can also visit the hilltop Pulikudi-Azhimala Shiva temple set amid scenic environs. From the terraced cliffs you can take in a panoramic view of the palm dotted coves overlooked by luxury resorts and the deep blue sea stretching into distance. And if you are feeling more energetic, rent a scooter and ride it around the secluded beaches past quaint fishing hamlets and plush wellness retreats. One of Kerala’s most ancient churches, the Analothbhava Matha church is also located by the beachside. You can attend mass here on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays.

The Shiva temple is open everyday from 0530 to 1130 hours and 1800 to 1930 hours.
