Introduction
A world away from the high profile holiday culture of Kovalam are the white sands of Pozhikkara tucked away in a little fishing hamlet, Pachalloor, about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) north of Samudra beach. On a drive from Kovalam, you will pass through a string of quaint fishing villages before arriving at Pozhikkara where the backwater merges with the Arabian Sea to form a salt-water lagoon. A thick canopy of palm lines this pristine stretch of sand which the locals use mostly for landing fish and fixing nets. The clear aqua blue water entices you to take a dip. If not simply stretch back on the beach and soak up the way of life in a fishing community. A stroll into the village behind the lagoon is a great chance to meet and get to know the locals - a curious mix of Hindu fishermen and Christian coir makers.
For those who wish to stay back for a few more days to suck in Pozhikkara’s authentic atmosphere, there are two guesthouses including the plush Lagoona Davina with exquisitely designed cottages along the water’s edge. At Pachalloor photographic opportunities abound particularly while walking the stretch leading to the lagoon from the village where you will find many derelict boats languishing in the sun and fishermen fixing nets or readying their boats to venture into the sea.
Some locals also offer an informal, old-style - traditional Kerala style - facial and body massage which they have honed over generations. Get yourself pampered with a therapeutic massage in the serene ambience of the coastal village. And if you have worked up an appetite after the rejuvenation therapy, head to one of the beachside kiosks. They all do a decent job of seafood and other local specialties. But fish dominates most delicacies at these humble seaside restaurants!
‘A bird-watcher’s paradise’ – this is another facet of Pozhikkara. Some ardent birders so much as camp in with fishermen's families to savor all the hues of the place, and keep an eye-out for the whimsical winged visitors.
