Introduction

There is an astonishingly unique structure that rests at an altitude of 4,267 meters (14,000 feet) on a hilltop in Changspa village, about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from Leh. Overlooking the Leh Palace from the steep hill (which can be reached by treading 500 steps), the white domed structure heralds the spread of a noble spiritual effort that began way back in 1914 in Japan. The Shanti Stupa was built by the Nipponzan-Myohoji order of Japan, a religious community that has been engaged in the construction of peace pagodas and temples in various parts of the world. Founded by Nichidatsu Fujii (Fujii Guruji) in 1914, the Nipponzan-Myohoji order had set out on a global mission to initiate the greatest objective of Buddhism – promote the principle of love and universal peace. India being the sacred birthplace of Lord Buddha, it was considered greatly fitting that an iconic pagoda like the Shanti Stupa be constructed here to observe the completion of 2500 years of Buddhism, with his relics at its base. Although the construction of the stupa began in April 1983 under the care of Lama Kushok Bakula (former statesman and international diplomat for India), it was completed only by 1985 and finally inaugurated by the present Dalai Lama in the month of August that year.

The Stupa was also aimed at revitalizing the practice of Buddhism in India and thus received immense support from the Indian and Japanese Governments, as well as local Buddhists who came forward with their offer of voluntary labor. The architectural treatment of Shanti Stupa is really unique. You will be greeted with a highly striking dual-level structure featuring a carved relief of the Dharmachakra (Wheel of Dharma) at the centre of the first level, flanked by two deer and some Buddhist followers. Seated on a platform right above it is a golden-hued statue of Lord Buddha himself, deeply absorbed in the Dharmachakra mudra. The second level of the structure has even more interesting relief carvings describing various stages in the life of Lord Buddha, vis-a-vis his birth, his victory over the devils and his attainment of Parinirvana. Ensconced all around both levels of the Stupa in double rows are smaller, intrinsically designed images of Buddha in a meditative trance. And if that’s not enough to impress, just synchronize your visit time to reach there a little before dusk so you can be fully consumed by the breathtaking views of the Changspa village, the town of Leh, Namgyal Tsemo Hill and the surrounding mountains before taking the crescendo to the final extravaganza. Post sunset, Shanti Stupa is completely illuminated, offering visitors a unique experience. Experiencing sunrise from the top is no different either, as the entire world would seem like coming to life right in front of your eyes.
