Introduction
Azhagar Kovil is one of the most celebrated temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, about 21 kilometers (13 miles) north-west of Madurai. Nestled atop a wooded hill amid panoramic surroundings, the shrine known as Alagarkoil and the hill Solaimalai, is home to some truly beautiful carvings. At this shrine, Lord Vishnu presides as Meenakshi’s brother ‘Azhagar’. Interestingly, when the celestial marriage of Meenakshi with Sundereshwar is celebrated during Chithrai festival in April/May, the idol of Azhagar is journeyed to Madurai. Devotees carry out a gold processional icon called the Sundararajar from Azhagar Kovil to Madurai for the wedding ritual. This beautiful idol of Sundararajar is made of pure gold and is a fine illustration of the craftsmanship of the ancient period.
On the same hill, only 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) above is one of the six abodes of Lord Subramaniya ‘Palamudhirsolai’, which also has a natural spring called Nuburagangai where pilgrims take a dip before entering the shrine.
Marvel at the exquisite sculptures that adorn the hall and other mandapams of the Azhagar temple. The ruins of a historic fort create a dramatic backdrop, accentuating the heavily sculpted main tower at the entrance depicting scenes from the Indian epics, believed to have been built by the Pandyan kings. As per historical records, Malayadhwaja Pandyan appears to be the earliest known monarch who patronized this temple. And it was Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan, who reigned during the period 1251-1270 AD., beautified the 'vimana' of the 'sanctum sanctorum' with gold plates. You will come across the shrine of Kalyana Sundaravalli, the divine consort of Alagar, in the southern enclosure. Other important shrines are those of Sudarshanar and Yoga Narasimha. The devotees hold Karuppannaswamy – the God of Kallars, and the finely carved eighteen steps, in great reverence. According to folklore, no person can ever lie at this spot!
Further on, explore the Kalyana Mandapa replete with beautiful sculptures on its pillars - a fine specimen of Nayaka art. You will also see life-size sculptures of the kings who ruled this place, besides many delicately carved idols related to the epics. A few of these pillars even surpass the workmanship found on ones at the Meenakshi Temple. Some of the most prominent ones are those of Narasimha, Krishna, Rathi seated on the parrot, Manmatha and Vishnu on Garuda, besides a few others.
The temple is rich in inscriptions of various dynasties, some of which date back to the glorious reign of King Ashoka. In addition to a few in a cavern on the hill, bringing to light the antiquity of the place.
There are a few rest houses at Alagar Koil, but it is advisable to stay in Madurai city where lodging options of all grades are available.
