Introduction
For the shopaholics, the main point of interest would be the town bazaar or Malcolm Peth as it is called after the then British Governor of Bombay, Sir John Malcolm. It lies at the heart of the hill station. The Town Bazaar comprises pedestrian only street lined with shops selling everything from fancy locally handcrafted walking sticks, leather footwear, tribal trinkets to snacks. Mahabaleshwar is famous for its produce of strawberries and mulberries. Here you can shop for fresh fruits or interesting fruit products like crushes (with big juicy chunks of fruits) and jams. Other hot selling items at the bazaar are pure mountain honey and chikki (a traditional Indian sweet made with jaggery and assortment of roasted nuts like peanuts, cashews, almonds, pistachios, etc.).
Imperial Stores at the far end of the Bazaar is a landmark in itself. Owned and run by generations of an Iran family it is a one stop shop for customers looking for anything ranging from videos to ice creams to provisions to liquor.
