Introduction
Below the iconic lighthouse, along the road is another fascinating Pallava relic, a rock carving called Mahishasuramardini Mandapam. You can either take the staircase to the right or simply climb the plain ground, and it will lead you to the opening of the Mahishasuramardini cave. Carved out of a single rock on the side of a hill, the northern wall of the shrine has an elaborate depiction of the fierce combat between Goddess Durga and the buffalo-headed demon, Mahishasura. Mahishasura symbolizes raw power, ignorance and egoism.
In the course of time, Mahishasura became so frightful that every celestial being dreaded the mention of him. To bring an end to the tyranny of this buffalo-headed demon, the Trinity - Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva - conceived the Goddess of Shakti (power), Durga. The sculptural relief of this fierce duel and the extraordinary level of detailing on them will leave you breathless. On the opposite wall, you will come across sculptural reliefs on grey stone of Lord Vishnu battling the demons Madhu and Kaitabha. Another wall has a massive sculpture of Lord Vishnu in his reclining posture under the hood of the Sheshanag (a thousand-headed serpent). Over this rock-cut cave is the 8th century Olakkaneeswara Temple from where you can behold spectacular views over Mahabalipuram.
Of the various depictions of scenes from the Puranas in the mandapam, the one of Goddess Mahishasuramardini (meaning the slayer of Mahishasura) riding her lion and brandishing weapons, is the finest. The mandapam stands testimony to the sculptural genius of the Pallavas, and is a must-see on your trip to Mahabalipuram.
