Introduction

Another paradigm of rock-cut architecture, the Varaha Cave temple was etched out on the rocky walls of a granite hill in the late 7th century by the Pallavas. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a monolithic rock-cut temple with a mandapam that has on its inside walls gigantic sculpted panels depicting Lord Vishnu as Varaha, the boar, holding in his arms Bhu Devi, the earth goddess, and nuzzling her breast as he rescues her from the snake king who had abducted her under the ocean. The four columns lining the entrance to the cave have lion carved into their bases.

On the rear wall inside is the shrine adorned with guardian figures on either side. Look up the relief portraying Goddess Gajalakshmi seated on a large lotus, with elephants on both sides showering water on her. Then there is Goddess of Shakti (power), Durga with four arms and Trivikrama overcoming demon king Bali. Take a closer look at the portrayal and modeling technique of the sculpture of an ardent devotee of Goddess Durga offering his head to the bloodthirsty goddess. A specimen of naturalistic Pallava art, the range of depictions on these panels brings out the contrast in mood and style.
