Introduction

Mani Bhavan is the place where Mahatma Gandhi stayed between 1917 and 1934 every time he visited Mumbai. A modest two-storied building in the Gamdevi locality, it is now a memorial dedicated to him. The room where Gandhi lived, his belongings including his books are on display. It also houses a museum, library and research centre.

Mani Bhavan originally belonged to Shri Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri, a friend of Gandhi. He hosted Gandhi on his returned from South Africa. It was from Mani Bhavan that Gandhi initiated nationwide movements such as Civil Disobedience, Satyagraha, Swadeshi, Khadi and Khilafat. In 1955 Mani Bhavan was dedicated as a memorial to Gandhi.

The place holds significance for history lovers. To later generations, it will give an idea of the dynamism of the great Mahatma. Of how he walked the uncharted path of non-violent resistance to foreign rule. The visitors from all over the world come to Mani Bhavan, to see the room that Gandhiji occupied, its Picture Gallery, the Library Hall and the Terrace where he was arrested on January 4, 1932. He used to sleep and hold his prayers on the terrace.

The library consists of around 50,000 books and periodicals. It contains books on and by Gandhi, Gandhian thoughts, freedom movements and allied subjects. It boasts of many out of print books. While the auditorium on the first floor is where films on Gandhiji are shown from time to time and recordings of his speeches are played on request. It is also used for holding meetings, seminars, discussions and various competitions for school and college students arranged by the Gandhi Study' Circle.

While walking out look out for Gandhi Postage Stamps, Photographs, Gandhian Literature, Statues and Medallions as memorabilia.
