Introduction
One of the defining images of Mumbai is that of Marine Drive. Skirting the bay shaped in the form of a flipped C, this palm-fringed avenue is one of the busiest roads in Mumbai. The 3-kilometer stretch, with the waters of the Arabian Sea to one side and modern highrises, Art Deco buildings and the Gymkhana Cricket Maidans to the other, form a tantalizing view. In-between the two runs a curving road with a broad promenade for walkers. Only Miami has more number of Art Deco buildings along the waterfront than Mumbai, most of which were built by the Parsis. By evening when city lights take full effect, the ‘Queen’s Necklace’ shines radiant. Dramatically illuminated, if seen from an elevated point (Oberoi hotel offers a great perspective), Marine Drive looks like a necklace with streetlights resembling a string of diamonds.
Marine Drive thrills all visitors. People come to take in the balmy sea breeze and watch the sunset. In a city where space is at a premium this is one area that gives you a feeling physical space. Morning witnesses joggers and walkers while evening sees people strolling and watching the sea. As the night wears on, the glitzy and glamorous side of this area comes to the fore. The stretch is full of swanky hotels, trendy faces and bars. Many of which offer view of the sea and fast moving traffic!
This long, curving stretch has some of the most expensive real estates in the world. It connects the city’s business district – Nariman Point – to Malabar Hill. At the northern tip of the road lies Chowpatty Beach, famous for its local snacks and joy ride games. In the lead up to the beach are a series of historic cricket grounds drawn on religious lines like Parsi, Catholic, Islamic, and Hindu gymkanas. These threw up many great cricketers during pre-Independence days of Pentangular championships. This popular tournament was scrapped at the behest of Mahatma Gandhi who did not want team formations on religious lines.
Marine Drive was built in the 1920s on reclaimed land, and is an absolute ‘must experience’ on a trip to Mumbai.
