Introduction
A brilliantly scenic 40 kilometer (25 miles) drive from Munnar on Udumalapet Road brings you to the rain-shadow village of Marayoor, on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. The natural beauty of this tired countryside relieves every weary traveler and becalms their minds. Stroll through this sleepy village, breathe in the fresh mountain air and bask in the quietude. Watch little wisps of cloud sail down the valley, the distant dark hills, rivers and brooks cut their way through sometimes grassy and sometimes rocky patches.
As you explore further, you will come across cave temples, lush sugarcane fields, waterfalls, stone coffins from the Neolithic period, and a seemingly endless stretch of sandalwood and bamboo forests. The Neelakurinji flower that covers the landscape with a tinge of blue every 12 years is a native to this region. You will find these natural caves with murals and relics from the New Stone Age civilization very intriguing. Walk into the sandalwood factory managed by the forest department which also has a huge children’s park canopied by an old banyan tree. You can pick up some authentic sandalwood souvenirs for your friends back home.
On the same day you can also take a trip to Thoovanam waterfalls and Rajiv Gandhi National Park located nearby. Besides being the only place in Kerala that has a natural growth of sandalwood trees, Marayoor is also popular for its hand-woven ‘pattu sarees’. Spend the day leisurely walking down this historical village of tremendous natural beauty. Meet the locals, enjoy a cup of tea with them, absorb their way of life, and don’t forget to shop for some traditional ‘pattu sarees’!
