Introduction
Affording an awe-inspiring view of the Western Ghats, Top Station at an altitude of 2200 meters (6800 feet) is a desolate outpost on the spur of a promontory. This vantage point is in fact a part of the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from the interstate border, opening up phenomenal views of the mountains and the plains of Tamil Nadu. A 40 kilometer (25 miles) drive up north of Munnar brings you to this wonderful place that got its name courtesy the Middle Station and the Lower Station that were once linked to it by a ropeway. Explore the abandoned aerial ropeway site that linked the foothills with the tea gardens. Lauded as an engineering marvel, a steam rail is believed to have been bought up this track in the early 20th century, which remained unused for technical reasons.
Founded by the British, you can still spot pack ponies and mules trot up and down the steep slopes carrying merchandise as they did some 125 years ago. Endless views of the deep misty valley stretching below make Top Station an ‘above the clouds’ experience.
For your interest, there are regular buses to this vantage point from Munnar (an hour’s drive), in addition to jeep services costing Rs. 400. You would have to be truly blessed to witness the endemic Neelakurunji blossom that splashes the landscape with a tinge of blue, for, this rare flower flowers only once in twelve years! Spend time basking in solitude, capturing the most in your lens and simply soaking up the natural beauty. Visit this one for its historical significance and some interesting folklores, not to mention a grand sweeping view of the Western Ghats.
