Introduction
Hathipaon and The Park Estate is a beautiful place within Mussoorie. It is an ideal location for a picnic or a trek. Though vehicles are allowed to go right up to the estate door. A rented taxi costs INR 400 and takes about three hours to complete the trip, including travel time and two hours at Hathipaon. Alternatively, tourists can drive up to Hathpaon, from where a short trek uphill leads to the Park Estate. There are no arrangements or facilities available here so visitors are advised to carry their own water and food.
Park Estate is the former house and office of the first Surveyor General of India, Sir George Everest, after whom Mount Everest was named. The interiors of the house remain unchanged, and have been painstakingly restored to give the place a timeless feel. Look forward to some splendid views of the Doon Valley below and the surrounding green mountains. The place has some lovely walks that open up photo opportunities. You will see local men walking up the road with loads on their backs (locally called Piththo). There is a small market here in Hathipaon where you can pick up some souvenirs.
