Introduction
Karanji Lake is one of the prime lakes of Mysore and a major tourist attraction managed by the Mysore Zoo. Located around the Karanji Lake is the Regional Museum of Natural History exhibiting the flora, fauna and geology of South India. India’s biggest walk through aviary is based on the shores of Karanji lake. It has been beautifully built with two water falls and small ponds and is home to 40-50 birds of different species. The aviary has birds like hornbill, kingfisher, white-peacock, turkey and black swan.
Karanji lake also has a small island which is called the Butterfly park and includes more than 45 species of butterflies fluttering around. The Regional Museum of Natural History is also located on the banks of this lake and is a favorite children’s attraction. The museum’s heavy use of models, audio-video aids and interactive exhibits make is a memorable learning experience for children. The Museum has galleries about Biological Diversity, Life through the Ages, Ecology, Conservation for Development and Man and the Environment.
