Introduction
Set up in 1979, the railway museum is one of the oldest of its kinds in India. The museum has an exuberant collection of vintage items with stories to tell. The Chamundi Gallery, named after the overlooking Chamundi Hills, had an exhibit of photographs and paintings which show the development of railways. The Sriranga Mantapa section holds the royal train compartments of the Kings and Queens of Mysore. This section also has a pillar from the Old Srirangapatna railway station along with a wired fence from the old times. The museum also displays a few old steam locomotives. Another interesting section, not to be missed, is the Maharani’s saloon carriage. It displays the splendid kitchen, dining car unit and a royal toilet dating back to 1899.
The battery-operated mini-train ride around the ground is another draw, especially for kids. Also, don’t miss out on the stories behind the still in running condition-Austin's Railway Car, Wagnell 119-ER and many others.
