Introduction
Running the length of Naini Lake, The Mall is Nainital’s beating heart. It is the commercial hub of the hill station, and is lined with myriad shops, restaurants, banks and other business establishments. After arriving into Nainital most tourists first head out to explore this lively promenade. Abuzz with activity at all times, the Mall Road or Govind Ballabh Pant Marg, is a place to enjoy hot chocolate fudge and shop around for decorative candles in delightful colors and shapes, and wooden handicraft among other exclusive souvenirs. A stroll down here after sundown is particularly a joyous experience - the clamor of the market reaches a new crescendo as happy groups of locals and tourists move about shopping, dining open-air, and enjoying the cold breeze wafting from the lake. Surrounded by a dark spine of hills studded with flickering lights, from a distant terrace one would think of the Mall as the only sign of civilization around.
Interestingly, The Mall has an array of shops dedicated to candles in different themes. Walk into one such store, and you will be spellbound by the sheer use of colors, the textures and the shapes they have been cast into.
Outside of candles, the hill station has shops specializing in wooden handicrafts, including beautifully carved canes. And if you take to preserves, pop into one of the shops selling an assortment of fruit preserves made of locally grown produce – this includes jams, pickles, squashes, fruit juices, not to mention farm fresh apples, peaches and cherries among others.
Nainital is a great place to shop for woolen clothing particularly for their dense threadwork. The local market is always full with beautifully embroidered shawls, colorful sweaters, caps and gloves.
