Introduction

The highest point in Nainital at an altitude of 2,615 meters (8579 feet), Naina Peak or China Peak, as it is also known, opens up exquisite 360 degree views of the Himalayas. The path leading to Naina Peak is lined with towering deodars, cypresses and speckled with scarlet clusters of rhododendrons blossoms. Before you the frosty pinnacles of the Himalayas stretch into distance and down below the eye-shaped contour of the Naini Lake looks like a cut out from a picture postcard. Naina Peak is about 6 kilometers (4 miles) from Nainital town, and can be accessed either on foot or horseback.

Trot a pony up the hill through a forest of rhododendrons, cypresses and deodars. This route is filled with brilliant photographic opportunities, and you can make stops along the way to soak up the pristine surroundings and take in a lungful of fresh mountain air. It would be a great idea to carry along a pair of binoculars for a better view of the surrounding countryside.

With formidable views of the snow-covered Himalayas stretching from east to west, Naina Peak is a must-do on your sojourn in Nainital. Nanda Devi, one of the highest peaks in India can also be viewed from here on clear day. Down below, the eye-shaped contours of the Naini Lake stands out like a drop of emerald, with the town on its shores making it look like an intricately decorated bowl.

Pack a lunch for yourself as the trek is long.
