Introduction
A trip to Nainital is incomplete without a boat ride on the serene Naini Lake in the shape of an eye. You can choose to board a row boat or a self-driven paddle boat. Feel the cool wind in your face as you sail to the middle of this emerald green lake and take in a breathtaking panoramic view of the rolling hills. There is something about boating on Naini Lake, it surpasses most boating experiences! With the deep green waters beneath you, and surrounded by undulating slopes, far away from the bustle of The Mall, you will feel a sense of peace and desolation. Along the way, let the boatman fill you in with some interesting folklores associated with the lake and why it is eye-shaped. You will also be pointed to a suicide spot – a rickety bridge housing a small shrine against the hill slope – where lovers who couldn’t consummate their love jumped off the bridge into the cold waters. It is the Naini Lake that lends Nainital its distinct character. You can hire boats on an hourly basis from both ends of the lake – Mallital (the higher end) and Tallital (the lower one).
There is a yachting club adjoining the lake that holds a yachting festival every year in October. Tourists and locals throng the shores to experience this colorful event with burning torches. After a boat ride, spend some time along the banks taking a stroll. The lake shore is thick with flowering plants, and speckled with benches so that you can sit around, enjoy the scenery and reflect at length.
