Introduction

"St. James is a beautiful church and one of Delhi’s oldest, located at the intersection of Church Road and Lothian Road. Built by Colonel James Skinner in 1836, the church is modeled on the Classical Renaissance style of architecture in a Greek cross design. Though the church bears a close resemblance to the dome of the Florence Cathedral in Italy, its architects Robert Smith and De Bude attempted to recreate the glory of London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral. Interestingly, traces of Mughal style are perceptible in the church, especially the porches on all sides with three entrances and the staircase into the church adorned with floral motifs in marble.

Set on a sprawling garden, the building is tucked away in a peaceful area, away from the clamor of the Capital city. Designed in a cruciform plan, the church has an east facing altar, and a ball and cross surmounting the dome, the original of which was damaged in the 1857 revolt. The centre of the structure has an octagonal shape, with circular columns supporting the dome. The history of the church goes back to early 19th century when James Skinner had fought for Marathas after being banished from the British Army owing to his mixed blood. When he once lay wounded in a battlefield and his chances of survival were bleak, he vowed that if he escaped death he would build a church to immortalize his faith in God. And subsequently he built St. James Church. Eventually he also started a cavalry regiment called Skinner’s Horse or Yellow Boys. To pay tribute to the indomitable spirit of this brave soldier, the Indian Army continued to have a regiment by the same name.

You will see the grave of Skinner in front of the altar, and graves of his family to the north of the church. There are also graves of soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1857 revolt, in addition to the grave of William Fraser, a popular British Commissioner of Delhi. St. James is steeped in history and folklore, and offers an interesting mix of architectural styles, not to mention an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
