Introduction

For as long as we can remember mortals have forever been spellbound by the mysteries of the world in any form and shape, including what we know as hot water springs. With claims of healing properties contained in them, there’s all the more reason to rush there and uncover the realities underlying their enigmatic status. Skeptics defy them, locals sanctify them, scientists dissect them and tourists glorify them; but the fascination quite clearly never ceases to vanish from their faces. Panamik is one such place that has invited the attention of a growing number of people in the recent times.

Situated about 150 kilometers (93 miles) away from Leh and at an altitude of 3183 meters (10,442 feet) the village of Panamik plays host to a hot water spring in the middle of nowhere. This village is the final frontier of India before the Tibetan territory begins, which is why civilians are not permitted to wander beyond this parts. The road to Siachen Glacier Base Camp (which again is off bounds for civilians) also goes through this very village.

The hot water spring is located on the outskirts of the village and is quite a sight to behold. It’s as if the whole of the water body is pulsating with life, dramatically manifested through water bubbles sprouting and then popping out everywhere. Even the thick patches of smoke floating over the water only add up to the romanticism of this place. It’s been said that the temperature of the water is really hot, with sulfur being established as the chemical that’s present here. No wonder it’s believed to be laden with healing properties, the effects of which can probably be experienced if you take a dip here; although it’s not everyone’s cup of tea to take the plunge. Even the slippery algae-coated, yellow-ochre hued rocks around the pool have a distinct tinge of sulfur over them and can be potentially hazardous if you’re not careful with your steps.

Panamik hot spring isn’t very far from the village and you will have to take a decent bit of uphill walk to reach the spot. The hot water streams languidly from the hill and into the pool where it finally settles. The landscape around the place will immediately catch your fancy when your eyes lock in on the view. The Nubra River flows nearby and a trek to its banks will open up a splendid view of cold and intimidating mountains, silky sand dunes and a generous expanse of green pastures. You can also trek 8 kilometers (5 miles) down to the river bridge at Hargam and cross it to visit the 250 year old Ensa Monastery, which sits strangely alone out there in the vast silence.
