Introduction
For a torrent of adrenalin to race through the body and surge over every muscle, perhaps few sports can upstage river-water rafting – or white-water rafting as it is also called. The river Lidder at Pahalgam offers the sport and you can race down the river rapids in an inflatable dinghy. The present runs are from Aru and Chandanwari. Apart from the thrill of the rafting experience, the river run is through some delightful countryside as the river winds its way down past the villages and through forests. The run lasts for approximately thirty to forty minutes and covers around three kilometers weaving its way through the rapids. The run is largely through mild and mid-level rapids – on a scale of one to five, this offers all categories. Scale six is termed as either impassable or can be handled only by experts. The stretch between Chandanwari and Nunwan offers all six categories. The season starts after the spring thaw and last through the summer months to the early monsoons. There are three or four operators in Pahalgam who offer this experience and provide life-jackets, wet-suits, paddles and expert handlers. In 2009, Pahalgam also hosted an International Rafting Championship. Young children, persons with heart conditions and or other ailments are advised against this activity.
