Of all the places in Kashmir, perhaps none is as easily recognized across India as Pahalgam is – and the credit for this must go to a long string of Bollywood films that have had either a song or some other sequence set in this breathtaking natural beauty. For example, there is the 'Bobby Hut' made famous by the seventies blockbuster love story, Bobby. The ‘Valley of Shepherds’, Pahalgam, was just that for several centuries and its rich pastures were used by nomadic herdsmen to graze their flocks. And then, in the early twentieth century, its immense beauty began drawing visitors who normally came for short camping trips and then returned either to Gulmarg or to Srinagar. The other reason for Pahalgam’s original importance was that it served as the base for the pilgrimage to the cave of Amarnath that is held sacred by Hindus.

Over the years, while the local population has never been very high (it is around 7,000 people today), the place developed a tourist infrastructure that was able to host visitors with varied budgets, time and interests. Today, many of Pahalgam’s visitors come simply to simply soak in the views that this narrow valley on the banks of the river Lidder offers. Others take long walks and hikes or pony treks. The option of angling for trout is also there. At an altitude of some 7,200 feet, Pahalgam is located forty-five kilometers from the district headquarters of Anantnag and is about a hundred kilometers from Srinagar. There are several hotels and lodges – though many close for the winter months.

History

Like the rest of Kashmir, Pahalgam owes much of its present beauty to immense tectonic upheavals that took place millions of years ago. The crashing plates of upper Gondwanaland, and those of Laurasia created the Himalaya mountains and its sub-systems. Two of these sub-systems are the Pir Panjal and the Zanskar and between lies the Kashmir valleys. Later events turned this with an ice cover that gave way to substantial glacial activity. And once the ice retreated and left high glaciers, snow clad peaks, rivers and lakes – and once the trees and grasses and other plants appeared - they softened this forbidding landscape to one of pastoral perfection. Neolithic man made his appearance and pit-dwellings have been excavated as have implements and other artifacts of the time. In the realm of verifiable history, Pahalgam was a part of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir and had significance as being the base camp for the pilgrimage to Amarnath.

Getting Around

Taxis and buses are available to get to Pahalgam. Around Pahalgam, bus services are somewhat limited, but taxis are available. Much of the place can be seen on foot, or on horseback – ponies with attendants who double as guides are easily available.

Tourist Traps in the City

Touts who also act as porters, guides and pony-men can occasionally be pestering and may overcharge. Do not wander into the woods without adequate advice or without the services of a guide – bears still roam this area and have been known to attack. Follow any other travel advisories that may be issued for the area.

Local Custom

Dress conservatively in public and respect local customs - especially while visiting a religious place.

Shopping

The range of possible shopping is not quite as extensive as nearby Srinagar, but many of the goods that Kashmir is famous for, are available in Pahalgam. These include the warm tunics ‘pherans’, shawls, wicker-work, scatter-rugs ‘namdahs’ and some wood crafts.

Communications

STD booths are available. Internet connectivity and availability is limited to a few internet places and hotels. All major GSM providers are there in Pahalgam - Idea, Airtel, Aircel, Vodaphone and Idea among others; but only post-paid connections function throughout the state of Jammu and Kashmir – though pre-paid ones may soon be allowed.

Mobile phones with connections from outside the state do not function in Pahalgam.
