Introduction
Sangachoeling Monastery, the second oldest monastery in Sikkim rests peacefully on what looks like a mesa, about 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) southwest of Upper Pelling. Literally meaning the “land of the sacred spell,” Sangachoeling Monastery was initially built in 1697, although the original structure crumbled under the impact of a serious earthquake. The complex is open to everyone, including the Bhutanese and Lepcha communities and even women, unlike the initial dictate of the Pemayangtse Monastery. The surreal ambience of the monastery is ideal for visitors who want to enjoy some quality soliloquy and meditate amongst the resplendent nature around. Offering some awesome sights of the Greater Himalayan range, the Sangachoeling Monastery is a truly magnificent monument worth visiting if you are in Sikkim.
From Pelling, you can saunter leisurely for about 45 minutes southwest across the helipad, soaking in the wonders of the nature as you walk along your path. The followers of the Nyingma-pa sect hold the Sangachoeling Monastery in great reverence, even as the historical complex is considered a great centre for Tibetan Buddhism studies in India. The monastery is a storehouse of some really valuable artifacts, including wall paintings, scriptures, and statues. The annual mask dance ceremony is celebrated in great numbers in the Sangachoeling Monastery, bringing in devotes from various corners of the state.
