Introduction

French missionary zeal in the 17th and 18th century saw numerous imposing churches built in Pondicherry. One such construction is the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On a trip to Pondicherry, you cannot miss this colossal Neo-Gothic structure that stands on the south boulevard, just beyond the railway station. Its rare stained glass panels depicting the life of Christ are awe inspiring. Over 100 years old, the church has withstood the ravages of time with only a couple of fissures in some of its windows. The building is about 50-meter-tall (167 feet), marked by rose windows, twin spires and a huge exterior. A brilliant display of Indo-European style, the interiors of the Sacred Heart Church are adorned with terracotta motifs, and a stunning range of stained glass paintings. The most arresting stained glass art form is imbibed at the windows on the either side of the church. You will come across the painting of a saint on each of its 28 windows including that of the Catholic saint and the national heroine of France, Joan of Arc. Don’t miss out the terracotta craft encircling the glass windows.

Another unique feature of the church is the statue of Madonna on the right side of the high altar, draped in a bright blue nylon sari. What fascinates you most about the church is the usage of colors - a striking mix of scarlet, moss green and milky white.

You can visit the church anytime between sunrise and sunset, and spend hours marveling at the architecture and appreciating its exquisite interiors.

Mass is held from Monday to Thursday at 6 in the morning and 6 in the evening; on Fridays and Saturdays at 6 in the morning and 5:30 in the evening, and on Sundays from 5:30 to 7:30 in the morning and 5:15 in the evening.
