Introduction
Located in the central region of the old colonial town opposite Raj Nivas, Government Park also known as Aayi Mandapam is an extraordinary example of Greco-Roman architecture, built during the reign of French Emperor Napoleon III. The park is a sprawling green space against a stark white backdrop, being surrounded by some of the most prestigious government buildings such as Lieutenant Governor’s Palace, Legislative Assembly, Government Hospital, Ashram Dining Room, the Cercle de Pondicherry private club, and the old Hotel Qualite.
There is a very interesting folklore behind the park monument. The Aayi Mandapam - a reservoir at the centre of the park - is named after a 16th century courtesan ‘Aayi’. Legend has it that to calm down a passing king, angry at having mistaken her candle-lit residence for a holy place, Aayi razed down her home and replaced it with a reservoir. And some 300 years later, Napoleon’s men would come to this lake to quench their thirst. When Napoleon heard of this lore, charmed by it he ordered a monument to Aayi.
The serene ambience of the park accentuated by the lush green lawn and flowering shrubs, makes it an ideal place for relaxing. There are four gateways to the park. For kids, the park has two dedicated play areas with swings, slides, nets and a musical fountain. Actually a dual fountain, in the day it is a typical dome fountain, and at nighttime, the waters make a brilliant display of light, music and rhythm. At sundown, the place is cast in a soft glow by the diffused lights from the cast iron lampposts. Enjoy a stroll in the park while taking in the fresh breeze; you will notice that the entire space is speckled with statues of prominent leaders of the Indian national movement and local deities. Don’t miss out the exquisitely carved monolithic pillars brought from the Gingee Fort to Pondicherry after its invasion in 1751 AD.
The aesthetics of the park combined with a classic architectural work, have made it a popularly visited attraction in Pondicherry. And an absolute must-do for a first-timer to the city!
