Introduction

A walk through the French and Tamil heritage quarters of Pondicherry, its Parisian style sidewalk cafes and the exuberant Beach Road, is a great way to soak up the local culture and the city’s leisurely approach to life. To experience this spirit of Pondicherry, set out on a guided heritage walk organized by INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage) through the old town and closely observe the nature of its architectural traditions.

The architectural character of the city is a result of hundreds of French and Tamil houses that create the ‘milieu’ or an ‘ensemble’. On this walk, you will be taken to both the French and Tamil quarters; the former constituting structures in the European classical style, while the buildings in the latter are in vernacular style of Tamil Nadu. An approx. 2-hour trail, you will first be walked through the French part of the town followed by the Tamil quarter. You can even opt for a guided heritage tour on cycle, a popular mode of transport in Pondy (as it is lovingly called by the locals). But if you wish to enjoy the weather, nature and the local way of life while exploring the architectural treasures, walking is the way to go!

Your walk will begin at the southern end of Goubert Avenue, also known as Beach Road or French Quarter (from INTACH office), where you will be met by your guide (available in English, Tamil, French and Italian languages). Stroll the lovely seaside promenade past Pondicherry’s most prominent landmarks such as Place de la Republique, where Mahatma Gandhi’s statue has replaced Francois Dupleix’s, the 19th century lighthouse, French War Memorial, the statue of Joan of Arc, the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, Pondicherry Museum, Government Park, Cluny Embroidery Centre, Art Gallery, Ashram Dining Hall, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, French Consulate and Maison Colombani among others. You will also see the French residential villas that extend on either side of Beach Road, interspersed by institutional structures. These structures are simple and varied, mostly with high garden walls and elaborate gateways. Wooden balconies over iron brackets, continuous parapets with simple ornamental elements, arched windows with bands, louvered wooden shutters, and flat terraced roofs - a deviation from the pitched roofs of the Parisian villas, are a characteristic feature of these residences.

After soaking up the French architectural style, move on to browse the Tamil Quarter. The sights include Sacred Heart Church of Jesus on South Boulevard and the Manakkula Vinayakar Temple behind Raj Niwas. Originally the Tamil township developed around the nucleus of a group of temples in the northern section of the city. While walking down this part of Pondicherry, you will notice the continuous wall-to-wall constructions that are far removed from the French streetscape. The façade of these residences feature a thalvaram (street verandah with a lean-to-roof over wooden posts), and a thinnai (semi-public verandah space) with masonry benches for visitors and pilgrims. You will also be shown around Bharathi Museum, Calve College, Ananda Rangapillai Mansion, Subbiah Museum, Kutpa Mosque, Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Iswaran and Perumal Temples to name a few.

Take a heritage walk in Pondicherry and discover the cross-influence of building patterns in the Tamil and French quarters that gives this old seaside town its distinct architectural vocabulary.
