Introduction
The Pondicherry Museum is located in Bharati Park on Saint Louis Street (behind the Governor’s House), and is home to an exclusive collection of stone sculptures, among other fascinating relics. The museum is housed in the former residence of the French Administrator, complete with large, airy rooms, expansive windows and high ceilings. Look out for the gallery with sculptures; here you will find an impressive display of bronze gods and goddesses, a range of temple lamps used by different dynasties across centuries, and handicraft, including remains from archaeological findings at Arikamedu, an ancient port site some 7 kilometers (4 miles) from the city. The exhumed relics trace the existence of trade links with the Roman empires. Don’t miss out the specimens of Chola and Pallava art from Pondicherry and Karaikal exhibited at the sculpture gallery. There is also a wealth of legendary French colonial details in a separate section of the museum. Browse the interesting collection of snail shells sourced from the Pondicherry region.
At the foyer and courtyard, you will see several stone statues and a fossilized tree trunk. Pan through the impressive display of vintage Pondicherrian vehicles on the ground floor. Look out for the palanquin, and the most curious one called Pousse-pousse (an early rickshaw) – it needed two attendants, one to steer and the other to push! Before leaving, take a closer look at the relics from Arikamedu which includes glass beads, remnants of Greek and Roman jars, precious stones and pieces from the Tsung Periods in China among others. Don’t miss out the collection of elegant cutlery and crockery, porcelain plates, lamps, locks, liquor cupboard, and showpieces that embellished the homes of the French in Pondicherry between 1673 and 1954. You will also come across a room full of vases of various sizes, shapes, textures and hues, besides the Arms Gallery and the grand bed used by the most popular French Governor of Pondicherry, Francois Dupleix, in the 18th century.
A trip to the museum is highly recommended as it gives you a glimpse into the historical and cultural heritage of Pondicherry.
