Introduction
The national heroine of France and Catholic saint Jeanne d’Arc, led the French Army to several important victories during the Hundred Years War, claiming divine guidance. On the lovely promenade running along the rolling sea, stands a lasting, triumphant sculpture of the heroic Frenchwoman Joan of Arc, frozen in white marble. A prominent example of French influence in Pondicherry, the statue of the French damsel is located in front of the Notre Dame des Anges, amidst a sprawling garden.
A typical French marble statue, the triumphant posture commemorates the valor of this great woman. The lively Goubert Avenue (locally known as Beach Road) on which the Statue of Joan of Arc stands as an inspiration, is dotted with several other important landmarks such as the French War Memorial, Statue of Mahatma Gandhi and Le Café. On an early morning walk along this 1.5 kilometer long stretch of Beach Road, you will see joggers, walkers, cyclists, people practicing yoga, and old couples sitting on the benches, holding hands and enjoying the sunrise. Truly, the ‘French Riviera of the East’ - the palpable calm of Pondicherry merges with its distinctly French appeal.
Rent a bicycle or board a cycle-rickshaw and make your way through neatly laid-out sectors of Pondicherry, where the streets run parallel and perpendicular to each other. You will notice that most of the buildings have been constructed in typical French style with long compounds and walls splashed with white.
