Introduction
Deriving its name from four peaks, the Chattushringi temple has a number of smaller temples, each dedicated to a particular form of the goddess Ambareshwari. Even though Chattushringi is the major deity of the region, the goddess is worshipped in other parts of the country, too, but under different names, such as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati, Durga, etc. Legend has it that during Shivaji's regime, there existed a money lender and mint owner of the Peshwa, by the name of Durlabhsheth Pitambardas Mahajan. A devout follower of Devi Saptashringi, whose temple was located at Nashik, every year he used to undertake the 300 km trip to pay homage to the goddess. However, as old age crept up on him, he found it more and more difficult to conduct his yearly journey. So, the Goddess appeared in his dream and told him to dig up a particular spot on a mountain in central Pune. Upon following her directions, he found an idol of the deity and built a temple around that area. Today, the temple attracts numerous devotees like Durlabhseth every day, with the crowd overflowing during the nine-day Navratra period, when the entire temple area is lit up with a thousand lights. The uphill climb has been made easy with the construction of well-constructed steps. On reaching the entrance, visitors are greeted with a scale model of the entire temple area. The Shri Devi Chattushringi Mandir Trust have been bestowed upon the responsibility to look after the temple and undertake developmental steps, while being ably aided by donations from devotees all over the world.
