Introduction
At a distance of 24km from Pune city, lies Dehu, the birthplace of Sant Tukaram, the most renowned Maharashtrian poet belonging to the 17th century, whose 'Abhang Gatha' is universally acknowledged as the finest example of literary work in the Marathi language. Located along the shores of the river Indrayani, the prime attraction of this ancient city is the Dehu Samadhi temple, which was built in 1723 by Narayanbaba - the Sant's younger son - and houses the deity of Lord Pandurang. Other tourist attractions include a rock on which Sant Tukaram sat while on fast, a temple in the name of Lord Ayyappa - a Hindu God revered mostly in South India and a garden constructed in the name of Sant Tukaram's wife.
