Introduction
Initially known as 'Lord Ray Museum', the building was originally the residence, or Wada, of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, a Marathi social activist, who was renowned as a proponent of women's education. The Wada, built in 1852, had a well dug especially for lower-caste people, and an ample courtyard with trees that offered shade for relaxation. In 1890, the Wada was converted into a museum and was rechristened as Lord Ray Museum. Till this day retains its original charm that evoke the ways of living in Pune back in the 19th century. The Mahatma Phule Vastu Sangrahalaya is showcase of art in various forms, be it on horns of animals, on grass blades, on a nut shell; or in jewellery, statues made out of a single piece of marble, oil paintings, brassware, handicrafts, clay modeling, textiles, and papier mache. The major draw for tourists, and especially children, are the articles related to anatomy of animals and samples of body structures ranging from that of the elephant to the seal.
