Introduction
Located in the Mulshi administrative division (taluka) of Pune district, Mulshi is a major dam on the Mula river, whose water is utilized both for irrigation purposes and production of electricity at the Bhira hydroelectric power plant, which supplies power to Mumbai. The marvelous Mulshi lake, that is just an hour's drive from the city, is a favorite weekend getaway for Pune-ites. Lined by the hilly terrains of the Sahyadri, with ranges rising up to 4000 ft; dense vegetation; and forts such as Dhangadh and Koraigadh, the lake and the dam are truly a nature lover's paradise. While the lake attracts a number of species of birds, the surrounding forests are the abode of trees such as mango, teak and oak as well as a number of rare species of animals.
