Introduction
It was the concerted efforts of Pune-ites, via an organization named Express Citizen's Forum, that lay behind the establishment of the National War Memorial in 1988. Located near M G Road, this structure is Pune's homage to those Marathi bravehearts of the Indian Army who have sacrificed their lives during the many battles India fought after gaining its independence. These wars include Operation Polo (liberation of Hyderabad, 1948); Operation Vijay (liberation of Goa, 1961); First Indo Pak War (1965); Second Indo Pak War (1971) and Operation Pawan (1987-89, Sri Lanka). Situated amidst a verdant garden, the highlight is a 25 feet tall pillar surrounded on three sides by stone plaques, that opens up to form forks, resembling a flower or a trident. Besides a Vijayanta tank, the main tank used by the Indian Army, the major point of interest is the names of 1200 soldiers, airmen and sailors from Maharashtra etched on the stone plaques. Space has been left aside for those who will follow these martyrs in their heroic deed.
