Introduction
Each evening multitude of Pune-ites visit Saras Baugh, a beautiful and well-maintained garden located in the heart of the city—at a distance of 4km from Deccan—to take in fresh air among verdant surroundings. The origin of the garden dates back to the late 18th century, when Madhavrao Peshwa after constructing the Shree Devdeveshwar Temple on Parvati hills, decided to beautify the adjoining areas by adding a lake at the foothills. A 25000 sqft island in the middle of the lake was later transformed into a picturesque garden, which the Peshwa christened as Saras Baugh after the Saras (crane), a bird that frequented the area. Within the premises he also built a small temple in the name of his God, Lord Ganesha. Today, the Saras Baugh temple is visited by thousands of visitors from all round the world every day, the number reaching a staggering 80,000 faithfuls per day during Ganesha Chaturthi, all seeking the blessings of Shri Siddhivinayak. For the devotees, there is an adjacent Ganesha Murthi Museum, which has a vast collection of Ganesha statues. A popular hangout for Pune-ites, the lush green lawns and blooming flowerbeds of Saras Baugh also attract joggers, evening-walkers and is a much sought-after venue by families for picnic arrangements. The adjoining Peshwe Park, with its zoo, toy train and boat rides is a perennial favorite among children.
