Introduction
Spread over a four-acre land, Shinde Chhatri, located at Wanowri, at a distance of 4km from Pune Camp, is considered by many as a perfect example of Vastushastra (a Hindu design system based on directional alignments). The memorial has withstood the ravages of time for over two centuries and has retained its original beauty. The 50 ft tall Chhatri, or memorial, with its gold-embossed roof was constucted in the name of one of the most famous Shindes, Mahadji Shinde, from whom are descended the Scindias, the royal family of Gwalior, who are equally renowned in the current Indian political milieu. The samadhi is adorned with a silver portrait of the great Maratha, dressed in a turban and shawl. Till this day, Mahadji's descendants use the same vessels with which he used to worship the family deity. Besides the Chhatri, which attracts on an average 200 visitors everyday, the complex also includes a temple in the name of Lord Shiva, commissioned by Mahadji himself. The temple is an exquisite specimen of Rajasthani architecture, replete with intricate designs and patterns, and stained glass windows.
