Introduction
Completing the Holy Trinity at Pushkar is the Aptaeshwar Temple. The Aptaeshwar Temple like the Varaha dates back to the 12th century CE. The underground shrine is dedicated to Lord Mahadev (Shiva) and is one of the temples that were destroyed by Aurangzeb only to be resurrected later. The temple has sunk over a period of time, as believed by the locals. And indeed, all evidence suggests that slowly but surely the Shivling at Aptaeshwar Temple is descending into the earth.
The Lingam, a symbol denoting Lord Shiva holds great importance throughout the Indian sub continent. Of the many Shiv temples around the world, the Aptaeshwar temple is considered one of the oldest. The Shivling denotes the primeval energy of the creator. It is believed that when the world comes to an end, when everything that was created is destroyed, then all the different aspects of God find a resting place in the Lingam. Brahma rests in the right, Vishnu to the left and Gayatri at the heart of the Shivling. Bel leaves and white flowers are offered by devotees, who also drench the Shiva lingam with milk, ghee, curd and honey.
