Introduction
Situated just 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) from Ajmer, one of the holiest Muslim shrines, the Brahma Temple is Pushkar is the oldest temple dedicated to the Creator of the universe. It also has the distinction of being the only temple dedicated exclusively to him.
Serenity in the midst of chaos is what the Brahma Temple signifies. Awestruck and confused foreigners bargaining with colorful local folk is a regular sight in the periphery of this calm and peaceful abode. Occasional sounds of cattle, camels and beggars vibrating in the air add to the devotees' euphoria as they climb the white marble staircase towards the grand entrance of the temple.
There are many bits and pieces of folklore associated with the origin are of this temple, which when connected offer a mystifying and scandalous mythology. The legend is that Lord Brahma set out to seek tranquil spot to perform a “yagna”, a kind of ceremonial sacrifice, when a lotus fell from his hand. A lake sprang forth from the ground at the spot where the lotus fell, now known as the holy Pushkar Lake. Lord Brhama then chose Pushkar as the site of his yagna. However, Brahma’s wife Goddess Saraswati could not make it to the yagna. Since the presence of a wife was crucial for the ceremony, Brahma in a fit of pique married a maiden named Gayatri. As expected, Saraswati, like most wives, could not stand her husband’s impatience and infidelity and flew into a rage, cursing Brahma that he would never be worshipped at any place other than at Pushkar.
First built in 14th century, the white marble structure of the temple stands serene on the lakeside. The present grandeur of the temple is mostly due to the refurbishment undertaken in 1809 CE. The white marble structure stands out very prominently against the dusty Aravallis that surround the temple from three sides. Cool steps lead up to a majestic gate, where a turtle of pure silver welcomes the devotees.
The inside of the temple is decorated almost exclusively in silver. These are mostly silver coins presented by devotees and engraved with their names. Also painted on the walls are peacocks, vehicle of Goddess Parvati. In the inner chamber is a four-faced idol, or Chaumurthi, of Lord Brhama. Painted alongside is a small impression of the reticent bride, Gayatri.
