Introduction
Located atop the lonesome Ratnagiri Hill, the Savitri Temple at Pushkar is dedicated to the wife of Lord Brahma, the patron deity of Pushkar. The temple houses a magnificent statue of the Goddess and is considered one of the five sacred dhams for Hindus. A short distance from the lake, a visit to the temple involves a steep climb. But the effort is well worth it. For once at the temple you can experience the serenity that is the bounty of the devoted. Or just sit back and savor gorgeous views of the holy town of Pushkar.
The temple is built on the site where it is believed the Goddess herself once rested. The tales of origin of Pushkar and its many temples are closely tied with the story of Lord Brahma and his wife, Goddess Savitri. It is believed Pushkar was the site of a yagna planned by Lord Bhrahma, which Goddess Savitri was unable to attend. Getting tired of waiting, Lord Brahma lost his temper and on an impulse married the milkmaid Gayatri. Perhaps it is only just that besides the Brahma temple, the next most important temple at Pushkar is that of his wife, Savitri.
An ancient structure, the temple has striking blue pillars topped by an equally vivid red dome. Al you leave the cluster of temples around the lake and head towards Ratnagiri Hill, your eye will be drawn to the lonesome temple that seems to stand guard over the city. From the foot of the hill, your climb begins - up the 702 steps to seek blessings from the Goddess. While walking up, you will come across several other groups - some old and infirm, some just drawn by their faith. You must also take the time to look around and admire the stark landscape of the Aravallis, distance sand dunes and the shimmering Pushkar Lake.
A word of caution, there may be some groups of monkeys on the hillside. Watch out for sudden appearances for food.
