Introduction

The main bazaar, one of the principal marketing areas in this holy town, consists of the Sarafaor Sadar road, Baza road and Kedalganj road. The most popular amongt these is Kedalganj.

The narrow bazaars are lined with an assortment of absorbing little shops. Here one comes across everything from glossy '60s-timewarp clothing to ethnic turbans, from stone statues of various Hindu deities to second hand novels of famous authors. Particularly good buys include local costume, exotic jewelry, glass lamps, embroidered fabrics such as wall hangings and shoulder bags, Rajasthani puppets and traditional music. Much of the stock comes from Jaisalmer and other tribal areas of Rajasthan. Haggling is necessary and expected, as Pushkar has long been exposed to tourists with money to burn and little time to burn it in. There's the usual market gimmick about 'last price' quotes that are safely negotiable.

The main bazaar is a good place to go to for food - as meal times or just for snacks. While the eateries at the main bazaar is strictly vegetarian the cuisine on offer is wildly imaginative. We can even find an egg free omelet at some places. Many places offer all-you -can-eat-meals for Rs 25 to Rs 40. German Bakeries too are all the rage.

Even an aimless stroll through this more-a-narrow-lane-than-a-road can be a physical and sensory obstacle course that demands constant alertness. As one walks down these lanes, a soothing and colorful side view can easily distract one’s mind but it comes back on track when the feet accidentally steps on some fresh cow dung. Yes, cattle droppings do pose a menace but fortunately the busy lanes are spared from rowdy auto rickshaws.

A prized member of the local shops is the “Denim Bhai”. This country boy has earned quite a celebrity status in the market area about his knowledge and philosophy evolving around jeans. He works in a local shop selling bed sheets and jeans to foreigners, particularly Israelis. Ask around ad visit his shop, even if you don’t have to buy anything. Even a conversation would be adventure in these lanes.
