Introduction

Trout were first introduced to India by an Englishman, Frank Mitchell. In 1899, he reared trout in the premises of his private carpet factory in Kashmir and established the first trout hatchery in 1901. In 1965, on the left bank of the river Baspa, a small trout farm was established and this now covers an area of an acre and a half. Located near the Hubra stream, whose waters finally flow into the Baspa, Brown trout (salmo trutta) fingerlings are raised in the farm and released into the Baspa. Almost all the camps in the Sangla Valley and some of the hotels have equipment that may be hired and they also offer the services of a guide. One of the finest table varieties of fresh-water fish, trout needs very little cooking and can be easily pan-cooked or seared. Most places will cook your catch for you.
