Introduction
The Sangla Valley has some of the finest easy hikes that can be done in the western Himalaya – and some gruelling trek trails too. There are what an experienced trekker will call ‘easy walks’ like the ever popular Batseri to Raksham walk that takes a couple of hours and passes through woods of Himalayan cedar (deodar) and birch, or the somewhat more demanding Raksham to Chitkul hike.
Other more rigorous treks are the one from Thangi to Chitkul. This starts in the village of Thangi goes past the village of Lamber to reach Charang; this, the first day, covers around thirty-two kilometers along a narrow valley. On the second day, there is a steady climb to Lalanti and on the third day, a there is a sharp descent to Chitkul. There are equally demanding treks that lead to Dodra Kwar or shorter ones like the one to Barua. One interesting route that leads to Sangla is from Sarahan and loosely follows the trail of the old Hindustan Tibet road.
