Introduction
As one approaches the village of Raksham, the valley widens and the waters of the river Baspa flow more slowly. A chocolate-box hamlet, Raksham is set before a mass of dark rock and moraine and is at an altitude of 3,115 meters above sea level. The place-name, ‘Raksham’ is supposedly a derivative from ‘rak’, a rock and ‘sham’, bridge - local lore has it that the Baspa’s waters corroded a stone dam leaving a span over the top - and thereby created a natural bridge at the spot. The village has some charming wood and stone houses and rests at the end of what can best be described as glen with thick forests. A section of the village was destroyed in a fire a few years ago, but has been rebuilt largely following the traditional styles of architecture.
The woods that surround this little village are classed as a ‘Himalayan moist temperate forest’ with ‘Alpine moist pastures’. The trees are mainly of deodar (Himalayan cedar) and also trees of the peeling birch, the ‘bhojpatra’ tree – whose strips of bark were used to write several ancient manuscripts. ‘Bhojpatra’ bark has also been used to provide the roofing material for some houses where layers of this are placed and then covered with earth.
The area is a part of the Raksham-Chitkul wildlife sanctuary that covers an area of approximately thirty-four square kilometers whose animals include the leopard, blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan brown bear, musk deer as well as few pheasants. Fields of the local grain, ‘ogla’ surround the village.
