Introduction

The More (also pronounced as ‘Moray’ and ‘Moreh’) Plains are one of the highlights of the Manali-Leh highway. Soon after Sarchu one leaves the Himachal Pradesh border and enters Jammu and Kashmir. 70 odd kilometers from Sarchu is Pang, the next settlement in the region. Soon after Pang the narrow road rises to open up to a high altitude plateau. The 45 kilometer long stretch of seemingly endless landscape is referred to as More Plains. At an average attitude at 15000 feet, the panoramic vistas that travelers encounter are exhilarating. It very often sweeps most travelers off their feet. Encountering the More Plains forces travelers to redefine their idea of the plains! Flanked by distant mountains on either side, the enormity of these Plains in front comes as a pleasant surprise.

This area has no habitation. Having said that, it is amazing to see how road construction workers put in hard labor where most travelers struggle to stay normal at such high altitude. Road construction at such high altitudes must pose serious challenges. Border Roads Organization is in the process of creating double lanes and their effort is commendable. On some stretches the road runs along the Sumkhel Lungpa River. And on others, dirt track made by vehicles passing through this stretch, pass off as roads. It isn’t uncommon to see trucks cutting through the Plains to form their own tracks, bypassing the roads laid out.

More Plains have their fair share of wildlife. Kiang (wild ass) is the most visible animal here. One can often see them galloping on the barren plains. Marmot from the rodent family is also very visible. The presence two lakes - Tso Kar and Tso Moriri - not too far away from the More Plains also result in a lot of bird sighting. People headed for these lakes get off the Manali-Leh highway at this point.
