Introduction
The Himachal State Museum and Library is one of the more popular attractions in Shimla. Ever since it’s founding in 1974, the museum preserves handicraft from Himachal’s far-flung villages and artifacts from the bygone era.
You will see a thematic display of artifacts in separate galleries. The Pre-Historic Gallery exhibits relics from the Stone Age and models of extinct animals. In the Archeological Gallery, you can view bronze statues, sculptures and other artifacts from the Maurya and Gupta period; some pieces are more ancient. Stone sculptures of local deities are also displayed here.
The Wood Carving Gallery, as the name suggests, showcases the finest of wood work in these hilly regions. Exhibits in this gallery include remnants of the wood work present in the temples of the bygone era. A collection of deity masks from the hilly districts of Kullu and Saharan dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries that are still used in the religious celebrations and cultural events, is also displayed here.
At the Numismatic Gallery, visitors can view the different types of currency once in use in the state. An assortment of Mughal and Rajasthani miniature paintings are showcased along with a small collection of Pahari miniature paintings in separate galleries. The Pahari miniature paintings beautifully depict the simple lifestyle of the hill folk before the arrival of the British. Apart from these miniature paintings, the museum houses beautiful wall hangings that once graced the walls of the Rang Mahal at Chamba.
Other exhibits include dolls, bronze statues, and armories, a small collection of contemporary paintings and photographs of important architectural buildings in Shimla. Apart from the many galleries, the museum has a library as well, which is a treasure-trove of ancient documents and manuscripts.
