Introduction
Nestled atop Jakhu Hill, the highest peak of Shimla, at an altitude of 2461 meters (approx. 8202 feet) the Jakhu Temple is a popular place of worship in Shimla and surrounds. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the temple has been in existence for eons and its exact origin is hitherto unknown.
According to popular belief, the temple dates back to the days of Ramayana, when Lord Rama and his brother, Laxman were fighting the demon king, Ravana. As per legend, Laxman got critically injured during the battle, and the herb that could save his life ‘Sanjeevani’ was available only in the Himalayas. Lord Hanuman journeyed to the Himalayas to get the herb. En-route he stopped at Jakhu Hill to ask sage Yaaku where he could find such a herb, and the hill sank a little under Hanuman’s weight.
Lord Hanuman promised the sage that he would stopover on his return journey but was unable to do so due to shortage of time. Yaaku was waiting for his return and when Lord Hanuman did not return he got very sad. The legend goes on to say that the sage then had a vision of Lord Hanuman, who told him the reason for not returning; the vision faded and was replaced by an idol of Lord Hanuman. According to popular belief, Yaaku built a temple for his Lord Hanuman, which still remains in the Jakhu shine.
To reach the hilltop, visitors need to trek up a two-kilometer stretch. Alternatively, you can hire a pony from the base of the hill. Jakhu Hill is famous not just for the temple, but also for the trekking opportunities it offers to nature lovers and adventure seekers. Numerous trekking trails and horse paths meander through the forested hill. The hilltop is also a vantage point to witness brilliant sunrises and sunsets over the verdant countryside. .
The path leading to Jakhu Temple has a big population of monkeys that can be a bit of nuisance. Hide all your eatables while taking the trek up. And if you must, hire a walking stick at the base of the hill for just 5 INR to ward off the monkeys.
