Introduction
This quaint hill station is filled with natural attractions, although much of its beauty has been marred by the recent emergence of high-rises. These scenic points at some distance from the bustling Mall Road and main Shimla, offer a green retreat to weary travelers. Some such natural wonders are Chadwick Falls, Glen Forest and Tara Devi Hill, Prospect Hill and Summer Hill.
Situated at an altitude of 1586 meters (5203.4 feet), Chadwick Falls is a gorgeous waterfall cascading from a height of 67 meters (approx. 219.82 feet) into a gorge. Tucked away amid thickly forested slopes, the waterfall comes across as a hidden treasure - a treat to the senses.
Chadwick Falls is about 7 kilometers (approx. 4.35 miles) from Shimla and can be reached by taking a 45-minute trek from Summer Hill through the hilly terrain. En-route, you will pass through numerous temples where you can pause for a while to catch your breath. As Chadwick Falls is rain-fed, it is best visited after the monsoon when it is in full flow and the surrounding forest lush and wild.
Another major scenic point and a popular picnic spot is the Glen Forest. About 4 kilometers from Scandal Point, Glen Forest is a thickly forested ravine with a sparkling stream running through it. Trek up the many trails meandering through this pine and deodars forest. You will pass many streams formed from melting snow. The Glen is located at an altitude of 1,834 meters (6017.1 feet) and can be easily accessed. There are two trails leading to it; one starts from near the Cecil Hotel and the other from near Kennedy House.
Apart from these, there are numerous trekking trails meandering through Tara Devi Hill, Prospect Hill and Summer Hill that are worth exploring.
