Introduction
Located about 15 kilometers (9.32 miles) from Shimla, the Ma Bhagwati Tara Devi Temple was built by Raja Balbir Sen of the Sen Dynasty in 1825. Even today the temple gets hundreds of devotees. The locals say that the descendants of Sen Dynasty continue to patronize this temple, and visit it on the Ashtami of Shardiya Navratras.
Legend has it that the king dreamt of goddess Ma Tara who commanded him to build a temple for her on the hilltop of Tarav Parvat.
Accordingly, the king commissioned her idol to be made from Ashtadhatu (a highly sacred combination of eight metals mainly used for making idols of deities). Once the idol was ready, he himself carried it up to the top of Tarav Parvat on an elephant and installed it there.
The temple receives devotees in droves during the Shradiya Navratras especially on the Ashtami,,when a huge fair is held in the temple complex. The hill on which the temple is located is known for its trekking trails and scenic views. The newly laid-out road from Shoghi to the temple has made it more accessible. The temple has been recently renovated to accommodate more devotees; this includes a langar halls (community meal hall) and kitchen facilities.
