Introduction
Upasani Maharaj Ashram is located off the Shirdi-Ahmednagar State Highway. Upasani Maharaj was an ardent follower of Shri Sai Baba, and had three spiritual heirs. The samadhi (memorial) of the Maharaj and the samadhi of one of his disciples is placed inside the ashram. You will see people queue up with flowers to pay tribute to the great saint of the 20th century. Believed to be a perfect master, one of his disciples Avtar Meher Baba called Upasani Maharaj, the best and the perfect master. Upasani Maharaj died in 1941, leaving a successor named Godavari Mai to run the ashram. From the official book stall, you can pick up interesting reads on the life and philosophy of Upasani Maharaj.

Shirdi is on the Ahmednagar-Manmad Highway, about 250 kilometers (156 miles) from Mumbai and 75 kilometers (47 miles) from Nashik. You can choose to fly into Nashik and then take a bus, taxi or train to Shirdi. Shirdi is accessible on the Central Railway line; get off at Manmad (65 kilometers/41 miles from Shirdi) or at Kopergaon (18 kilometers/11.25 miles). Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) runs buses from all major destinations.
