Introduction

Only a few sports can compare with the thrill that river rafting (or white-water rafting, as it is often called), offers. There is a surge of adrenalin that races through every vein and surges over every muscle as you paddle in an inflatable dingy over the rapids. The experience is enhanced at Sonamarg as the landscape the river passes through is simply stunning. Meadows and woods reach the banks and in the backdrop are the snow covered mountains. Sonamarg has also hosted International Rafting Championships. In 2008, this was jointly organized by the India Rafting Foundation and Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department. Sixteen teams including three foreign teams participated in the championship; three women teams also took part. This had competitions in four categories – Spirit, River Race, Marathon and Slalom. The grade scale of the rapids (on a scale of one to five, with five being unnegotiable), can touch four.

Championships apart, the sport is available for those who would like to experience its thrill. There are operators in Sonamarg who take you on a river run that can last up to an hour as the dinghy twists and turns through the waters. They provide wet-suits, paddles and life jackets as well as expert handlers. The activity is available only in the summer months after the spring thaw, that is from around May to August.
