Introduction

Sonamarg and the area around may well be described as a paradise for walkers and trekkers as well as for ‘pony-trekkers’. The trails are numerous and varied. Most are well defined and have been in use for decades if not centuries. There are others that require a greater sense of adventure and fitness – but all told, the range is from mild to strenuous. In terms of time, there are some that can be covered in a few hours, others that can last a few days and a couple where the trail can be extended for over a week.

Routes lead to the lakes of Vishansar at 4084 meters, Krishnasar at 3810 meters and Gangabal at 3658 meters. The Gadsar has snow-trout and Satsar is a glacial lake surrounded by wild flowers. The little valley of Baltal lies fifteen kilometers north and is at the foot of the pass of the Zoji-La and is on the Sonamarg-Amarnath route. Closer still is the Thajiwas glacier, which is only three kilometers from Sonamarg; this also has excellent camping sites and a few organized camps – which offer tents and meals – are also available. Also within easy distance is Yushmarg which has fine woods and pastures and is a popular picnic spot.

Of the more demanding treks, there is the one to Gangabal which takes around a week. The route leads up to the steep Nichnai Pass at 4080 meters. The Vishansar and Krishnasar lakes are en route and have campsites. To reach the Gadsar lake there are steep ascents followed by equally daunting descents. Then comes the trek to the Satsar lake and the views of the majestic Harmukh Peak. The Gangabal lake lies at the base of the mountain.

From Gangabal, a 17 kilometer descent leads to the Naranag ruins. Further down is Wangat which is connected to Sonamarg via Kangan by a blacktop road. Trekkers can also reach Leh, in Ladakh by crossing the Zoji La pass.

For many of these treks, ponies with attendants who also act as guides or porters, are available at Sonamarg.
