Introduction
Perhaps Srinagar’s most enigmatic shrine is that of Roza Bal and this relatively unimposing structure is perhaps also the one that has been most widely publicized across the world. Numerous media articles, a few books like ‘Jesus Lived in India’ by Holger Kersten have been written around it and this has also been featured in a couple of television documentaries. The Roza Bal is located in a narrow side-street in the heart of the old city, in the Khanyar quarter. Of those that believe that Jesus survived the crucifixion, there are some who believe that he lived on and came to Kashmir where he finally died when he was at least a hundred years old. This is the place where Yuz Asaf (Youza Asouph), believed by some to have been Jesus of Nazareth, is said to be buried. As such, the site is also called the Ziarati Hazrati Youza Asouph. It is believed that the internment of Yuz Asaf was done according to Jewish rites. In the same tomb is the body of a local saint, Syed Nasir ud Din who was buried in the Islamic tradition.
The building itself is a relatively unprepossessing one and is built on a slightly raised plinth. One face of the building has three arches and another has four. This is topped by a roofing of corrugated iron. A decorative octagonal tower and parasol on the roof and the signboard mark the building out from the surrounding ones. Within, is another chamber with glass windows and this encases a cenotaph. The actual body is supposedly buried below.
The shrine, was originally maintained by a family who claimed to be the descendents of Syed Nasir ud Din. On the death of the last of this line, the tomb is now maintained by a board of local Muslims.
